Austin: Lennar Unveils New Model That Even 'The Waltons' Would Like

Forty years ago “The Waltons” television series introduced American families to three generations living under the same roof. Audiences of the popular show probably couldn’t have conceived then that the concept of multigenerational living would catch on again. Blame the Great Recession that began in December 2007 or just the growing trend toward more sustainable living, but having mom and dad, adult kids perhaps with children and grandparents in the same house has come full circle. So much so, that Lennar Homes recently introduced its NextGen housing concept in Teravista, a master-planned community in Round Rock. “We’ve been listening to our buyers out there and what they really want are two master suites on the first level,” said Fred Wyborski, Lennar division president in Austin. But Lennar didn’t stop there. The homebuilder added a small living room and kitchenette to the floor plan along with a separate entrance. They called the new layout the NextGen home. In essence the company took a 3,600-square-foot home and reconfigured the first floor to incorporate the separate living space. Wyborski expects the idea to catch on in a big way.
