Using Light Colors To Sell A Home

Light neutral colors may be better when you’re selling your home. So should you repaint a dark dining room? “The general rule of thumb is to paint it a neutral color, usually some type of white or ivory,” said Lisa Garey, a senior vice president at Bellmarc Realty in Manhattan. “That’s the safest thing to do.” The idea, she said, is that a vanilla color scheme will allow buyers to envision themselves in the space, rather than being overwhelmed by the seller’s personal taste. Still, that doesn’t mean you should automatically break out the paint. As with any rule of thumb, there are exceptions. “I’ve seen cases where colors work in a seller’s favor,” Ms. Garey said. “If they have a certain sophisticated style, or maybe they’ve had a decorator do their apartment, it can actually make it stand out.” And that generates more interest from buyers.
